Harvard evacuates four buildings after bomb threat; all are now cleared by police

Three classroom buildings and a dormitory at Harvard were evacuated Monday afternoon because of a bomb threat that was e-mailed to campus.
All four buildings had reopened before 6 p.m. and the threat was determined to be unsubstantiated, according to a spokesperson for the Cambridge Police Department.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m., Harvard University officials posted a warning on its Web site:
“An unconfirmed bomb threat has been received. The Science [Center], Sever, Emerson, and Thayer Halls are being evacuated. More info to follow.”

“As most of you are now aware, we received an unconfirmed bomb threat affecting the Science Center, as well as Sever, Emerson and Thayer Halls on the Cambridge campus. The buildings have been evacuated and law enforcement officials are on scene. Entry to the Yard is restricted. We will provide updates as soon as we have additional information.”

A little before 3:30, the university announced that it had lifted the restrictions on the Yard and Emerson and Sever had reopened. Thayer was cleared later in the afternoon.
Katie Lapp, executive vice president of Harvard, had posted earlier that, “As of this writing, nothing to substantiate the emailed threat has been found. Harvard is working with local and federal law enforcement officials to investigate the source of the threat, which has not yet been determined.
“The safety and security of members of the Harvard community is always our top priority. In the wake of recent tragic events in locations ranging from Paris to Beirut and beyond, we understand that this type of threat will cause great anxiety for many across our campuses. We will continue to be vigilant as we carry on Harvard’s mission of expanding and disseminating knowledge.”
The Harvard Crimson reported that the same four buildings were threatened nearly two years ago, a threat that was later determined to be unfounded.
